Vermont to stock almost 770k trout and salmon statewide

Posted

MONTPELIER, VT. >> The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife has begun stocking 768,500 trout and salmon in lakes, rivers and streams across the state.

Of the total number of fish that will be stocked, nearly 300,000 will be large enough to catch. There will also be 20,000 trophy trout.

Fish Culture Specialist Jeremy Whalen says the goal of the fish culture and stocking program is to maintain and restore fisheries, while also increasing fishing opportunities for anglers.

Fisheries Biologist Rich Kirns says that many Vermont waterways are able to support naturally reproducing trout populations, but where habitat conditions have limited the ability of a waterbody to sustain wild trout, hatchery raised fish can support popular fisheries.
