Search to resume Friday for body of missing boater

BARNET (AP) -- The Vermont State Police say a search for the body of a boater presumed drowned in the Passumpsic River in Barnet is over for the day.

Police and rescue crews plan to resume the search for 22-year-old Zachary Florio of Passumpsic on Friday.

Police were called to the river at 2 p.m. Wednesday near the junction of Comerford Dam Road and Route 5 for the report of a canoe with three adults in it that had overturned.

Two of the boaters were able to swim to shore. Florio was last seen in the river and then disappeared.

Vt. State Police investigating officer shooting

WINOOSKI (AP) -- Vermont State Police detectives are investigating what’s being described as a shooting that involved a Winooski police officer.

There’s no immediate word on the condition of the man who was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after he was shot.

The names of the man and the police officer involved have not been released.

Witnesses told the Burlington Free Press a man who lived in the area was shot early Thursday afternoon after an officer tried and failed to subdue him with a stun gun.

Chittenden County State’s Attorney T. J. Donovan said the incident will be investigated by detectives from outside the area.

Vermont State Police Maj. Edward Ledo, head of the criminal division, said the investigation is in its preliminary stages.
