Vermont fines Berlin tire recycler

BERLIN (AP) -- The owner of a Berlin tire recycling business has been fined more than $17,000 by the state of Vermont for operating a solid waste facility without a permit.

Judge Thomas Durkin of the Environmental Court imposed the fine against Fred Budzyn of Budzyn Removal and Recycling.

He had been cited for several violations last year, including storing tires on his site without the proper fire lanes.

State officials say Budzyn has since applied for a solid waste permit and is expected to get one in the near future.

A phone message left for Budzyn at the business drew no immediate response.
