Vermont city bans smoking, vaping tobacco in parks

WINOOSKI, VT. >> A recently approved ban on smoking or vaping tobacco products in certain areas in the Vermont city of Winooski came into effect last week.

The prohibition approved by the city council in April took effect on Wednesday. Smoking is no longer permitted in Landry and West Allen parks and the Meyers Memorial Pool.

The Burlington Free Press reports that the rule aims to reduce youth tobacco use, risks from secondhand smoke and litter and environmental degradation from cigarette butts.

The Winooski Coalition for a Safe and Peaceful Community says that tobacco-free policies encourage young people to make healthy choices.
