BENNINGTON — The Bennington Rural Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at a Northside Drive car dealership on Monday afternoon.

The fire was first reported at approximately 12:40 p.m. According to Wayne Davis, chief of the Rural Fire Department, the vehicle in question was a white jeep, and the fire was caused by an electrical issue. It is not clear why the vehicle was at Carbone Ford, where the fire occurred, said Davis, but it was not owned by the dealership. The vehicle is considered a total loss. The Bennington Police Department, which had officers present on the scene, did not immediately return a call inquiring if there is an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.

The vehicle was outdoors when it ignited, and reports over the scanner described employees spraying the vehicle with a garden hose prior to the fire department arriving, in order to keep the fire in check. There are no reports of damage to other vehicles.
