VAE announces spring and summer classes

NORTH BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is happy to announce its Spring/ Summer classes for teens and adults. These two, six-week sessions in Ceramics and Drawing and an ongoing Life drawing class begin June 17. In its 20th year as a community arts organization, VAE is pleased to welcome a new artist/instructor Jessica Phillips to the VAE Ceramic Studio. From Arlington, Jessica has taught classes, workshops and held residencies throughout the country as well as exhibiting her ceramic work. Returning to VAE is Bennington artist/instructor Renée Bouchard who will lead her class inside and outside into the world of drawing. Don’t want a teacher or to commit? Join the Life Drawing class and drop in for ten bucks! This is a great environment to not only brush up on your skills but to learn in this safe, nurturing environment. Following are details on the three classes.

Ceramics with Jessica Phillips

All levels.

Wednesdays, June 18 - July 23. 6:30 - 8:30 pm. $150 for 6 weeks.

During this six-week session students will explore various methods of hand building as well as an introduction to the basics of throwing on the wheel. We will work with a variety of techniques to create functional and sculptural ceramic forms. Special attention will be paid to surface decoration and glazing including making your own stamps and creating interesting texture and patterns on the ceramic surface. This class is for all levels and abilities, students will work in a small group setting to learn the entire process of making, glazing and firing.

Improvisational Drawing from Nature with Renée Bouchard.

For beginners and beyond.

Tuesdays, June 17 - July 22. 6:30 - 8:30 pm. $150 for 6 weeks.

Renée reminds us that a drawing is simply a minor manipulation of materials. Fostering the moment to moment experience in art making we will seek to engage our senses in new ways using a variety of materials and exercises designed to train the eye, hand and imagination to work together. Combining basic perceiving skills with methods for abstraction and invention opens us up to respond to the natural world with more freedom. Walks around VAE and Lake Paran will include drawing imagery derived from personal imaginative sources or memories, collaborative doodles, photographs or poetic imagery.

Figure Drawing Drop-in

On Going & Self-Guided.

Thursdays 7 - 9 pm. $10.

Bring your drawing supplies and master the art of figure drawing with a live model in these informal studio sessions.
