Update: North Adams woman killed when car hits pole

NORTH ADAMS -- A North Adams woman was killed early Friday when she crashed into a utility pole on West Main Street in North Adams, according to North Adams police.

Deborah Pierce, 56, of Cleveland Avenue, was ejected from the Chrysler van after she struck the pole near the Hillside Cemetery shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to North Adams Police Director Michael Cozzaglio.

She died on impact, according to Cozzaglio, who said speed was a factor in the crash.

The accident shut down West Main Street for several hours while police investigated the cause of the accident.

The road was reopened about 11:45 a.m. The repairs to the pole could take several hours to complete, North Adams Mayor Richard J. Alcombright said.
