SVC's Orrell earns NECC honor

BENNINGTON &mdash The New England Collegiate Conference announced on Monday its final weekly award winners for the 2016 regular season with Southern Vermont College junior captain Mel Orrell staking claim to the Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week laurel for the period ending April 24.

The well-deserved honor is the second in Orrell's collegiate tenure after she picked it up in the first week of the 2015 season.

Orrell had a career week for SVC, helping the Mountaineers go 2-1 in NECC action to clinch a playoff berth and earn the No. 3 seed. She totaled 20 goals in Southern Vermont's four games, adding 18 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers, and 28 draw controls during the week.

The junior netted seven goals and 10 draw controls in a Wednesday win at Bay Path University before notching a season-best eight scores in a hard-fought 20-18 SVC triumph over Elms College on Saturday. She also recorded her 100th career goal against the Blazers on Saturday while her eighth tally of the day saw her finish the regular season as the NECC's leading scorer with 59 on the year. Additionally, the attacker broke her Southern Vermont program goals record of 43 earlier in the week.

Orrell and the Mountaineers now get set to make an NECC playoff run this week, matching up once again with Elms in SVC's first-ever home postseason game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
