SVC volleyball falls to Endicott men on road



NASHUA, N.H. -- With a chance to continue moving up in the New England Collegiate Conference men’s volleyball standings, the Southern Vermont College men fell short to league leaders Endicott College 3-1 on Thursday night.

SVC (10-8, 6-3 NECC) dropped the first two sets 16-25, 24-26 before rallying in the third to win 25-19. But needing to win two more sets to secure the victory, SVC fell in the fourth set 25-10. Endicott is now 14-8, 9-1 NECC.

Scott Fitzgerald and Anthony Barahona each had 11 kills in the loss, while Fitzgerald also added 15 digs. Keven Walley added 11 digs and eight kills in the losing effort. Anthony Ayala had 34 assists for SVC.

Endicott was led by Brennan Lowe with 15 kills, while Travis Netherton had 11 and John Osborne and Josh Anderson each had 10. Tyler Bacon had 15 digs for Endicott while Anderson added 11.

SVC returns to action on Sunday at the Mountaineer Athletic Center against Regis in a 5 p.m. contest.

Babe Ruth registration

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington County Babe Ruth will hold registration for the 2014 season on April 1 and 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennington Fire House on River Street.

Anyone from 13 to 15 as of May 1 living in Southern Vermont or eastern New York is eligible.

Bring a birth certificate to registration if you haven’t played Babe Ruth before.

Registration fee is $100 per child with a $150 family maximum and 40 percent is dedicated to fundraising efforts.

Bennington Road Race

BENNINGTON -- The 36th annual Steve Zemianek Bennington Road Race will be held on Sunday, May 4 beginning at the Park McCullough house in North Bennington.

The event this year is being dedicated to the memory of local educator and marathon runner Gail Harwood. The race is produced and directed by the Batten Kill Valley Runners.

As in past years, all net proceeds will be donated to the Mount Anthony Union High School Zemianek scholarship fund.

Races start at 9:30 a.m. with the kids race. The 3.8K and 10K races will be run simultaneously beginning at 10 a.m.

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 after May 1. A t-shirt will be given to the first 200 registrants of the 3.8K and 10K races.

Runners can register online at Paper registration forms are available at Wills Insurance, Bennington Recreation Center, Off the Wall, Anytime Fitness, Shaftsbury Country Store, Bennington Sports Center and all schools in Bennington and North Bennington.

SVC basketball camps

BENNINGTON -- Registration is now open for the 2014 Southern Vermont College Basketball Summer Camp.

Interested boys and girls entering grades 3-11 can sign up by visiting and downloading a registration brochure.

The camps will run June 30 to July 2, July 14 to July 18, July 21 to July 25 and August 4 through August 8. Each session goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
