SVC to offer post-grad CT program
BENNINGTON -- Starting this fall, Southern Vermont College will offer a Radiologic Sciences Certificate Program in Computed Tomography.
The one-year, 16-credit online post-graduate program is intended for registered radiologic technologists who "want to advance their careers into the area of CT," according to a release from the college. CT is a process of imaging the body in three dimensions using diagnostic X-rays.
According to SVC program director Linda Lippacher, CT is one of the fasting growing areas in diagnostic imaging today. "If you are dually certified in diagnostic imaging and CT, your job opportunities not only double, but triple," she said, "What's great about the SVC program is that it's totally online; technologists can be located anywhere, and can arrange to complete their preceptor work, the clinical component, at a hospital and facility near them."
The three-course program is open to registered technologists in the areas of radiography, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy. According to the release, students who complete the three-course program will "be prepared to become technically proficient, entry-level, CT technologists. Upon successful completion of the course set, students will be eligible to apply to take the advanced certification examination provided by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists."
The program is based on a "preceptor" model. As explained in the course's description on SVC's website, "Preceptors are peers that aid the trained individual in new skills. For example, a preceptor will explain the procedure and how to do it, and then they will demonstrate the procedure and follow up by observing the preceptee as they perform the procedure. Precepting usually involves an intense time commitment and requires the preceptee to shoulder some of the educational responsibility."
The program has yet to be reviewed by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, but the organization will do so at its September meeting.
There is a $30 application fee for the program, and a $200 enrollment deposit, in addition to the $7,500 cost of tuition for the full program. SVC offers payment plans and financial aid for those who qualify.
