SVC teacher picked for NCAA conference

BENNINGTON -- Southern Vermont College annouced that faculty member Jeb Gorham was recently recognized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for his outstanding work as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) on campus, and has been invited to attend the 2014 NCAA Division III FAR Fellows Institute conference in October.

The FAR Fellows was instituted by the NCAA to increase support and build a strong faculty advocacy for student-athletes on campus. As a Faculty Athletics Rep, Gorham serves as the liaison between the athletic department and the faculty at SVC.

In what was just his third year as SVC’s campus FAR, he was nominated by New England Collegiate Conference Commissioner Del Malloy for his leadership qualities and dedication to the student-athletes. After his nomination, Gorham then had to pass a final selection cut by the FAR Institute planning committee. Additionally, Malloy has asked Gorham to serve as the conference FAR for the upcoming school year, a position that entails signing-off on the NCAA Initiative Grant Impact Statement.

"It is an honor to be chosen by our institution, the conference and the NCAA to serve a higher role on campus in promoting and supporting institutional athletics," Gorham said in a statement released by the school..

Currently, Gorham is an assistant professor with the McCormick Division of Business and the head of the Sports Management program at SVC.

He moved to the area from Colorado in 2011, where he worked in the sports fitness, health and wellness fields for over 10 years.

His devotion to both his students and the Southern Vt. campus led to his selection to attend the NCAA FAR Fellows.

"I’m looking forward to learning how to best nominate SVC student-athletes for NCAA scholarships," Gorham added in the statement. "Being in the sports management field, another aspect I’m especially interested in is seeing how I can get our students and student-athletes more involved in the NCAA in terms of employment or internship opportunities."

"We’ve known from the beginning just how valuable Professor Gorham is in reinforcing the concept of the student-athlete so integral to the Division III mission," noted SVC Director of Athletics Michael McDonough. "We’re very proud that Jeb has been recognized by our conference and the NCAA for his valuable work at SVC."

The conference will be held from October 17-19 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the home of the NCAA national offices.

There will be 26 other 2014 NCAA Division III FAR Fellows representatives from across the country meeting for the professional development event where they will learn how to become more effective in their roles on campus.
