Monday's honor is the second weekly accolade this year for SVC after Bennington College freshman Kemly Derby (New York City, N.Y.) was selected as the Conference's Rookie of the Week back on September 25.
Sowles and the Mountaineers turn to non-conference action for their next match as Southern Vermont heads to SUNY Delhi on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. first serve.
Shapiro Tabbed NECC Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
ATTLEBORO, Mass. — The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Monday its weekly award winners for the period ending October 8, 2017 with Southern Vermont College freshman Nicole Shapiro being selected as the Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Shapiro notched her first two collegiate points on Saturday with a pair of assists during the Mountaineers' 5-0 win over Wheelock College.
Her first helper came in the opening stanza when the rookie carried the ball into the right side of the penalty area; she brought it all the way to the six-yard box before crossing it into the middle where junior captain Molly Madore was waiting to punch it in. Shapiro then added a second assist in the final 45 minutes with a long cross from the right touchline to the top of the box—setting up junior teammate Naya Cerda
Monday's laurel is Southern Vermont's third NECC Rookie of the Week honor this year as freshmen Rileigh Griffiths and Jayne Wierzbicki were bestowed with the award on September 18 and October 2, respectively.
