Students offer free Halloween hair and make-up help

BENNINGTON — Trick-or-treaters looking for a little help with their hair and makeup need look no further: The Southwest Vermont Career Development Center's Cosmetology program has got you covered.

On Halloween, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the center's cosmetology room (C152), students from the program will be offering free hair and makeup for children ages four to 12, to help make their costumes even better. Donations will be accepted to help support the program. The CDC is located on Park Street, adjacent to Mount Anthony Union High School.

Cosmetology teacher Jennifer Morgan-Hall said that the event is an opportunity for students both to help local families and to build their people skills and their ability to do hair and makeup for children. The cosmetology program operates a full service salon on Tuesdays and Thursdays for limited hours, but Morgan-Hall said that the students are always looking to refine their skills and they rarely have the opportunity to work with children, who are typically in school when the salon is open.

The work will primarily done by second- and third-year cosmetology students, though Morgan-Hall said the first-year students would be involved as well, in order to get them experience. Currently, there are 29 students enrolled in the program.

While this is the first year the program has held an event for Halloween, the students are no strangers to working in the community. Three to four times a year they offer manicure services to residents at Brookside Apartments, and are considering expanding that to another location this year, said Morgan-Hall. The students also have given presentations at local elementary schools.
