State drops lewd charge against Bennington man

BENNINGTON -- The state dismissed a felony charge against a Silver Street man who had been accused of groping a woman he met at church.

Jason Dansby, 31, pleaded not guilty in October to lewd and lascivious conduct and was held without bail based on a habitual offender status.

He was convicted in 2003 of sexual assault on a victim under 16.

It is not clear when he was released, but the state dismissed the charge against him on Feb. 25. Deputy State's Attorney Christina Rainville said depositions were taken that raised some issues with the case. She would not comment further.

According to police, a woman had accused Dansby of touching her buttocks and other places near Lake Paran.
