St. Johnsbury police warn about phony tax calls

ST. JOHNSBURY, VT. >> Police in St. Johnsbury say a number of residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service who demands money to settle unpaid or disputed tax bills.

Authorities in the Vermont town Monday reminded residents not to give out personal identifying or financial information to anyone who contacts them by email or phone.

Police say the IRS contacts people by mail and not by phone or email.
