Southern Vermont College receives bequest to support student scholarships
BENNINGTON >> Southern Vermont College (SVC) has announced the receipt of a generous gift to support student scholarships, bequeathed by former trustee, Mario (Mike) F. Rolla. Rolla, who passed away in 2013, was a Trustee of the College for 20 years, eight of which he served as Chairman of the Board. Through his planned gift, SVC has established the Rolla Family Scholarship endowment, which will provide assistance to students with demonstrated financial need starting this fall.
"Mike Rolla believed very much in the mission of SVC, which affirms 'a deep belief in the potential of every individual'," said SVC President David Rees Evans. "He gave his time, talent and treasure to this college in order to support his belief in that mission. We are humbled and honored to use his momentous gift to help carry on the mission of the College and to preserve his legacy. The Rolla Family Scholarship endowment will provide strong support to a significant number of students to help them attend SVC. Following Mike's wishes, each scholarship will be renewable over the recipients' SVC career to encourage them to progress to graduation."
Evans said that the bequest will be used immediately to fund scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year and continue in perpetuity. "We are pleased to offer this scholarship opportunity to students this fall," President Evans said. "Mike's family, his wife Maureen, his daughter Adrienne and her siblings are excited to see his gift have an immediate benefit to SVC students. The Rolla family is part of the fabric of SVC, and we are honored for the family name to be woven into the stories of student success through the Rolla scholarships."
Rolla was a graduate of New York's Xavier High School, Pace University and St. John's University School of Law. He was a managing partner with the law firm Ronayne, Hackeling & Rolla in Manhattan, where he worked for 25 years. He was also an investor in several business interests as well as regional and national real estate development.
Rolla served on the SVC Board of Trustees from 1987 to 2007. He was a resident of Hubbardton, Massachusetts, and Rockland, Maine.
