Shumlin starts group to help get work for people with disabilities

MONTPELIER >> Gov. Peter Shumlin is setting up a group to recommend hiring practices to increase access to employment for people with disabilities.

The group will look at opportunities to partner with employment organizations, review current state training programs, and create additional training opportunities in an effort to bring individuals with disabilities into state employment at a rate as close to that of the general population as possible.

Shumlin on Wednesday signed an executive order establishing the Disability Employment Working Group.

More than 82,000 Vermont residents have a disability and fewer than 35 percent of Vermonters with disabilities are employed.
