Sherwin's walk-off sends Bennington to states

BENNINGTON — It took until the final inning of the District 2 10U Little League regionals, but Bennington won the championship on a two-run walk-off single by Hunter Sherwin in a 6-5 win over Brattleboro on Saturday.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bennington trailed by one run with the bottom of the lineup coming up. Bryce Tienken led off and chose the perfect time for his first hit with a single. Steven Collette walked to put two on with no one out. Colin Brady hit into a fielder's choice for the first out and after both runners moved up on a passed ball, Sean Moriarty struck out to put Bennington to the brink.

Sherwin came up and on their final strike, hit the ball back up the middle into center field, driving home Collette and Brady racing home behind to win it.

"This was clearly about two teams who were as equally matched as you could find," said coach Matt Maroney. "They seem to live for the dramatic."

Vance Kobelia started for Bennington, throwing the first 3 2/3 innings. Moriarty came in to get the final out of the fourth. Collette struck out three of the six batters he faced to keep Brattleboro within reach.

Keegan Systo was the starting pitcher for Brattleboro and allowed three runs in the first inning, but settled down quickly after that.

"It was a great series with 26 great kids," Maroney said. "It's too bad one team had to go home."

The all-star team now moves on to the state tournament, scheduled to take place starting on July 22 in Shelburne.

The team members include: Colin Brady, Riley Britch, Cash Campalungo, Drelend Carey, Steven Collette, Sawyer Crosier, Corbin Hayes, Vance Kobelia, Ryan Maroney, Sean Moriarty, Carter Sandquist, Hunter Sherwin and Bryce Tienken.
