Safford Mills owners purchase former Peppermills building

BENNINGTON>> The former Peppermills building has a new owner.

John Redding and Lisa Harrington-Redding, owners of the Safford Mills Inn & Cafe, purchased the building on April 15.

Redding said he and his wife are looking towards expanding their own business, which is next door.

"Our business has been consistently growing for the almost three years we've been open," Redding said Wednesday. "We're really at the point where we're trying to decide whether to expand where we are or look somewhere else. This property became available and the timing was perfect."

They purchased the building and .19 acre property at 716 Main St. from the Bank of Bennington for $27,000 on April 15, according to property transfer records.

Built between 1769 and 1774, Safford Mills Inn & Cafe at 722 Main St. is the oldest house in downtown Bennington. The inn has three guest rooms and a speciality martini bar and cafe open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays.

Redding said he and his wife are still finalizing their plans for the former Peppermills space and are close to announcing more details. As of now, they're looking for an opening in late summer or early fall.

Peppermills was owned by Kathleen and Richard Musinski, who decided to close the restaurant on New Year's Eve of 2014 after 10 years in business.

The 2,336-square-foot restaurant with room for 95 patrons was built in 1930 and is valued at $239,000, according to the assessor and lister's office. A 1,280-square-foot storage warehouse also sits on the property. A two bedroom/one bathroom apartment is above each building.

The Bank of Bennington acquired the building from a bankruptcy estate for $50,000 in January.

The building was once the long-time home of the Vermont Steak House. Ed Pinsonneault opened the restaurant and, with the help of his family, ran it for 35 years. The restaurant changed ownership a handful of times before it closed in late 2001 after some 40 years in business, according to Banner archives.
