Route 30 to be closed March 30 for bridge work

BRATTLEBORO -- Project managers of the Interstate 91 West River bridge replacement project announced Wednesday that Route 30 will be closed for up to a six-day period starting on Sunday night, March 30. It is hoped Route 30 will be re-opened by Friday afternoon, April 4. The actual closure date and start time will be confirmed at least 72 hours in advance, depending on weather conditions. Once the closure begins, no through traffic will be permitted on Route 30 through the I-91 right-of-way.

The recommended detour sends traffic on a loop through Rockingham and Chester via I-91, Route 11 and Route 103, which adds 22 miles for through traffic. In previous Route 30 closures, local law enforcement has patrolled Upper Dummerston Road, which is known locally as a quicker detour around the construction site but is not suitable for large vehicles.

Weather permitting, night work will be conducted Sunday night, March 23, through Friday night, March 29.

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge in the Fall of 2015.

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

No project impacts to Upper Dummerston Road are anticipated for the week of March 23.

The West River Trail is closed at the Marina Trailhead and through access will not be permitted from the north. Truck activity on the West River Trail will be increasing heavily throughout the spring and summer. For everyone's safety, recreational users of the West River Trail are should seek out alternative access points to the West River Trail or one of several other trails available to the community. Signage at the Marina Trailhead and Rice Farm Road Trailhead will indicate current trail status. The trail is open from the northern trailhead to a point just north of the bridge construction area. The northern trailhead access location is on Rice Farm Road, about a mile south of the Iron Bridge.

Demolition activities over the West River will continue over the next several months on the existing northbound bridge. Workers will monitor the site and ensure that recreational traffic is kept away from overhead activities.
