Roundup: Swimmers first in Southern Districts



RUTLAND -- The Bennington Marauders competed in the Southern Vermont Championship meet on Saturday in Rutland. The Marauders were able to secure the first place trophy in Division II over Killington, Springfield and Rockingham. Many of the Marauders also placed in the top 3.

Zoey Haar was a part of four winning races, including the two relays -- the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. She also touched the wall first in the 50 free and 50 butterfly.

Phebe Hall and Emily Barlow each had three first place finishes, both competed in the two relays, while Hall won the 50 backstroke and Barlow won the 100 breaststroke.

On the boys side, Zach LaForest was the big winner with four, both relays and individual victories in the 50 free and the 50 back. Garrett Ufnar added three wins, with the relays and the 100 back, as did Anthony Mazzola.

Other swimmers finishing in the top 3 include: Grace Burhans: 3rd-100 back; Morgan Flynn: 1st-200 Medley Relay, 3rd-100 IM, 3rd-100 breast, 1st-200 free relay; Kate Ahearn: 1st-200 Medley Relay, 2nd-200 IM, 2nd-100 back, 3rd-100 free, 1st-200 free relay; Ben Medvedev: 2nd-100 back; Bridget Ahearn: 3rd-100 back, 3rd-200 free, 3rd-100 free; Victoria Medvedev: 3rd-100 breast; Camden Madison: 2nd-100 IM, 2nd-50 free; Kendal Madison: 1st-25 free, 3rd-25 back, 1st-50 free; Summer Nichols: 1st-25 free, 3rd-25 back, 1st-50 free; Nathan Younce: 2nd-25 free, 1st-25 fly, 3rd-50 free; Elyse Altland: 1st-25 breast

Also competing and posting best times for the Marauders was: Meghan Barilone, Jordan Barilone, Sarah Martin, Isabel Mazzola, Logan Parizo and Ashley Steinhoff and Elizabeth Ufnar.

The Marauders will compete again this weekend in White River Junction at the State Championship meet, the final event of the 2014 summer season.

MAYAA youth football

BENNINGTON -- Sign-ups for MAYAA football are currently underway at Tomasi’s Sports.

There will be three more sit down sign-up dates on July 30, Aug. 4 and Aug. 8 at the Ross Pavilion at Willow Park from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

For the flag division, children must be age six by Sept. 1. The tackle division is for children age eight, and the child must have played one year of flag. The cost is $20 for the flag division and $50 for the tackle division.

Coaches needed

ARLINGTON -- Arlington Memorial High School is looking for coaches for the fall season. Positions open include a middle school cross-country coach, a varsity cross-country coach and a middle school girls soccer coach.

Goldsmith tourney

BENNINGTON -- The annual Lee Goldsmith Memorial Soccer Tournament will take place on August 9 this year at Willow Park in Bennington.

The tournament, which honors the former MAU athlete who died tragically in 2009 after his fight with cancer, will start at 11 a.m.

Teams must be made up of high school students (as of September 2014), and must have at least five males on the team. Co-ed teams are allowed, but the team must be made up predominantly of males.

The tournament will feature 7-on-7 soccer, with six outfield players and a goalie. The games will be 25 minutes long, and there will be large goals and no offside rule.

The cost will be $70 per team, and the winning team will receive championship t-shirts. To register, call or text MAU boys soccer coach Mike Molloy at 802-375-4006. Teams will pay to play on the day of the tournament. Teams must be registered prior to the morning of the 9th. Check in will run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Bat Brats try-out

BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Bat Brats are looking for softball players for the U12 and U14 teams.

U12 players need to be 12 as of Jan. 1, 2015, while U14 players need to be 14 as of Jan. 1, 2015.

The Bat Brats are looking to field three teams for the 2014-2015 season, with one at the U12 level and two at the U14 level.

The try-outs will be held Aug. 2 and Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon.

SVC hoops camp

BENNINGTON -- Southern Vermont College men’s basketball coach Dan Engelstad will be hosting one more summer camp for area youth players.

The camp will run from August 4 to August 8, with each day’s session going from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Friday, the session will end at noon.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 3 through 11.
