Roundup: Patriots fourth at state meet

VERGENNES --The Mount Anthony Union High School cheerleading team finished a mere two points short of placing in Division I at the state meet on Saturday at Vergennes High School.
Essex won the state championship in D-I with 177 points (out of a possible 200 points). Rutland was second with 166 points, and Vergennes was third with 119. MAU was tied for fourth with South Burlington with 117 points.
Poultney were the champs in Division II with 139 points, with Mount St. Joseph and Mill River reaching the podium.
Essex, Rutland, MSJ and Poultney were invited to the New England championships for Vermont.
MAU invited to regional
VERGENNES -- The Mount Anthony Union High School dance team competed on Saturday at the state championship at Vergennes Union High School. The Patriots finished fourth in both routines, the hip-hop and Pom genres.
Mount Anthony has been invited to the New England championships that will take place at Bellows Falls in a couple of weeks.
Eagles top Blue Mtn.
WELLS RIVER -- The Arlington Memorial High School boys basketball team ended the regular season on a high note with a 51-34 win over Blue Mountain on Saturday.
The Eagles had three players in double figures led by DJ Jennings’ 16, Nathan Mattison’s 13 and Austin Hawley’s 11.
Arlington finishes the regular season at 3-17 and await their seedings that come out today.
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. -- The Bennington Marauders competed their regular season on Saturday in Ballston Spa at the Cabin Fever Invitational. Sixteen of the 30 swimmers competing placed in the top 8. Placing for the Marauders were: Kara LaFlamme: 6th-100 breast; Ryan Spencer: 4th-200 IM, 3rd-100 back; Aryn Iannuzzi: 4th-50 breast, Zoey Haar: 2nd-200 IM, 3rd-100 free, 4th-50 free, 7th-100 back; Sarah Ascuitto: 5th-50 fly, 8th-100 IM, 7th-100 free; Emily Ascuitto: 8th-500 free; Kendal Madison: 7th-50 back; Iris Nofziger: 8th-50 free, 8th-25 back; Camden Madison: 6th-100 free; Elyse Altland: 1st-100 IM, 1st-50 free, 3rd-50 back.
Posting best times for the Marauders were: Bridget Ahearn, Kate Ahearn, Jordan Barilone, Meghan Barilone, Emily Barlow, Ryker Dorman, Caden Hall, Perrin Marion, Mary Pilot, Elise Talbott, Garrett Ufnar, Elizabeth Ufnar, and Zoey Zazzaro.
The Marauders will compete again March 7-9 at the Silvers Championships in Troy, N.Y.
BENNINGTON -- In a Saturday afternoon men’s volleyball tri-match at the Mountaineer Athletic Center, Cairn University defeated both Southern Vermont College and Daniel Webster College by 3-1 margins while the Mountaineers fell to the Eagles 3-1 in the opening match.
DWC defeated SVC with game scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, and 25-23. The Highlanders then bested Daniel Webster with set scores of 25-7, 25-16, 27-29, and 27-25. In the day’s finale, Cairn knocked off SVC with tallies of 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, and 28-26.
With the pair of wins, CU improves its season record to 6-6. The split moves DWC’s mark to 4-7 overall, 2-0 in the NECC, and SVC drops to 1-1 and 3-6 on the year.
Senior Day win for Hoosac
HOOSICK, N.Y. -- On senior day, Hoosac defeated Winchendon on Saturday 86-72. The game was decided in bursts with Hoosac ending the first half on a 13-2 run and again midway through the second half with a 17-4 run.
Charles Wingate led all scorers for the first time this season with 28 including 6 treys. Unique McLean was close behind with 27, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line. Gregg Brayhwaite had 16 and Damani Guscott had 10.
BENNINGTON -- Anyone interested in officiating boys lacrosse or getting updated on new rules and officials field procedures for the upcoming season can attend a free officials clinic. The clinic will be held at Mount Anthony HS on March 9 from 9 a.m. to noon in the cafeteria. Topics will include new rules, 2 man mechanics, personal and technical fouls, player safety and points of emphasis for the 2014 season. Anyone can attend and the clinic is free. D-I semifinal tickets
Tickets for the VPA Division I Girls Basketball Semifinal game -- No. 3 Mount Anthony vs. No. 2 Rice on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at UVM’s Patrick Gym -- will go on sale at the MAUHS main office from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today, and from 7:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can also be purchased at UVM before the game, as available. POWNAL -- The Pownal Cal Ripken Baseball is looking for players for the upcoming season. The team is open to all Pownal and surrounding area children ages 4-12. Children ages 9-12 can play in Cal Ripken sanctioned tournaments.
There is no registration fee for any child. Sign-ups will be Feb. 24 and 26 from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pownal Elementary School gym.

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Little League is opening registration for the 2014 season. Registration for the season is Feb. 19 and 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fire House on River Street.
All players 5-12 in the Bennington school district looking to play baseball this year need to register on one of these four dates.

ARLINGTON -- The Mack Attack AAU girls’ basketball season will begin practicing on March 9, and sign-ups are ongoing.
