Roundup: Patriot girls hold on to beat Rutland



BENNINGTON -- In what Mount Anthony Union High School girls lacrosse coach Tom Otero called "a very competitive game," the Patriots held on to beat Rutland, 13-11, on Thursday at the Vets Home Field.

MAU (4-3) led at the half, 8-5, but Rutland tied the game at 9 with 9:24 remaining. The Patriots scored the next three goals to take a 12-9 lead, but the Raiders had one more comeback, scoring two in a row to trail 12-11 with 2:20 left.

Annie Peck scored in the last seconds to reach the 13-11 final.

Emily Altland, Peck and Emily Cross all had three goals, while Courtney Gabrus, Erica Hale, Taylor Palmer, and Courtney Andrews all scored once. Sam Mayer and Leah Olansky combined for nine saves.

For Rutland, Marina Rotella scored seven times.

Cambridge ekes past HF

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- In a defensive affair, the Cambridge Central School boys lacrosse team topped Hoosick Falls, 4-3, on Thursday.

Cambridge led 2-1 at the half, and each scored a pair of goals in the third quarter, but neither team could find the cage in the fourth.

Nate Gates had two goals for Cambridge, while Chris Warnke and Kordell Benson had one. Christian Hunt had 15 saves for the Indians.

Noah Labarge, Damon Dubois and Mark Hackett scored for Hoosick Falls, while Chris Shielding had eight saves.

Cambridge improves to 7-4 in the league and 8-4 overall.

BBA still unbeaten

MANCHESTER -- The Burr and Burton Academy girls tennis team improved to 8-0 on the season with a 7-0 bagel over Hartford.

Maddy Pagnucco, Irene Matas, Stella Oh, Eliza Breed and Silvia Velasco all won singles matches in straight sets.

Julia Campanella and Maria DePablo won the only contested doubles.

Holy Names tops Hoosick

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls girls lacrosse team got five goals from Hannah Fricke but it wasn’t enough as Holy Names topped the Panthers, 18-11.

Jordyn Haynes added two goals, and Elise North-Kirkman, Caytlyn Springer, Alyssa Houghton and Kara LaFlamme all scored.

BBA softball rolls

RUTLAND -- The Burr and Burton Academy softball team scored 11 runs in the third inning en route to a 21-7 rout over Mount St. Joseph on Thursday.

Caitlyn Arellano was 4-6 at the plate with three doubles and five runs scored, while Rachel Senecal was 5-6 with a triple, double and four runs scored.

Laura Gutierrez was 5-6 with a triple as well as BBA pounded out 26 hits.

Darien Halliday was the winning pitcher, going the distance and striking out nine for the Bulldogs, who have won two in a row and host Green Mountain on Saturday.
