Roundup: Patriot boys ski to MVL crown

WOODSTOCK -- In the final day of the Marble Valley League Nordic skiing championships, the Mount Anthony Union High School boys team wrapped up an MVL title while the girls fell just short of Woodstock.
After the individual Classical and Freestyle events last week, the team’s took to the course on Monday for the Relays, and the MAU boys took first to help secure the MVL crown.
The team of Luke Keenan, Andy Barlow, Nick Altland and Will Buckley topped second-place Woodstock, with Rutland finishing third, Burr and Burton Academy fourth and Brattleboro fifth.
In final point totals, MAU won the MVL with 54 points, while Woodstock had 101, Rutland had 107 and BBA had 137.
"The boys skied well," said MAU coach Bruce Smith. "They are skiing well, they stayed healthy and those are the keys."
In the girls’ race, the MVL winner came down to who finished first in the relays, and Woodstock won to secure the crown. MAU was second in the relays, Rutland was third and BBA was fourth.
In final totals, Woodstock won with 68 points, MAU had 75, Rutland finished with 126 and BBA had 201.
MAU’s team was made up of Abby Malmborg, Kinsey Boudreau, Erica Hale and Molly O’Callaghan.
"It was Woodstock’s day," Smith said. "Last year, we took it from them [in the relays] and this year they took it from us."
MAU now turns its sights to the State race, with Thursday being the Freestyle individual and relay races at Middlebury College. Next Tuesday, the state will go to Mt. Top for the Classical events.
Pownal youth baseball
POWNAL -- The Pownal Cal Ripken Baseball is looking for players for the upcoming season. The team is open to all Pownal and surrounding area children ages 4-12. Children ages 9-12 can play in Cal Ripken sanctioned tournaments.
There is no registration fee for any child. Sign-ups will be Feb. 12, 24 and 26 from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pownal Elementary School gym.

BENNINGTON -- Mt. Anthony Lacrosse Association will hold 2014 spring registration on February 25 and 26 at the Bennington Rec Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades K thru 8.
Scholarships and equipment are available.
The season starts April 1.

Benn LL sign-ups
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Little League is opening registration for the 2014 season. Registration for the season will begin on Feb. 12 and 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Feb. 19 and 20 at the Fire House on River Street.
All players 5-12 in the Bennington school district looking to play baseball this year need to register on one of these four dates.

Mack Attack sign-ups
ARLINGTON -- The Mack Attack AAU girls’ basketball season will begin practicing on March 9, and sign-ups are ongoing.
