Roundup: MAU leads after 1st day of Lowell tourney

LOWELL, Mass. -- Nine Mount Anthony Union High School wrestlers had undefeated days and remain in the running for championships at the Lowell Holiday Tournament.
MAU leads after the first day of the tournament with 116 team points, outpacing Timberlane, N.H.'s 102. Shawsheen is third with 85.5, while Natick and Dracut (Mass.) are the rest of the top 5.
Troy Gassaway at 113 pounds, Tyler Mattison (170), Brandon Marcoux-Schaefer (195) and Jesse Webb (285) have won all their matches by pinfall.
Marcoux-Schaefer has been the most dominant wrestler, pinning all three opponents in a combined 4 minutes, 31 seconds of mat time.
Also unbeaten on Thursday were Calvin Call (106), Kyle Fletcher (126), Miguel Calixto (132), Austin Price (182) and Jack Luciano (220).
Fletcher won his 100th career match in the third round, decisioning Natick's Kevin Christie 5-2. He moves on to face Timberlane's Ryan Peters in the quarterfinals today.
"Overall we are wrestling pretty good," said MAU coach Scott Legacy. "It should be a war tomorrow."
Calixto continued the unbeaten streak to his season, having won the first 17 matches of the year. He won his first match by tech fall 17-1, then pinned the next two opponents.
Four wrestlers have a single loss -- Garrett Derosia (120), Bailey Willard (138), Houston Shaler (145) and Damon Young (160).
"Wrestlebacks have been key to getting the lead," Legacy said.
The next closest school with wrestlers in the championship bracket is Timberlane with six.
