Thursday February 28, 2013

MIDDLEBURY -- The No. 13 Mount Anthony Union High School team put it all together at the right time to pull off what could be the upset of the Division I boys basketball tournament, defeating fourth-seeded Middlebury, 51-45, on the road Wednesday night.

Aaryngston Bibens dialed up 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Sean Brundage collected 15 points and nine boards to lead the Patriots (7-14).

"We played a phenomenal game," MAU coach Dan Sleeman said. "We followed the gameplan to a ‘T.’"

Mount Anthony led 47-45 in the final moments when Bibens knocked down 3-of-4 on 1-and-1 free throws to push the lead to 50-45 and seal the win. Hao Guo played a key role defensively, Sleeman said. Mount Anthony led at the end of every quarter and held a 39-33 lead going into the final frame.

Mount Anthony travels to face No. 12 Burlington on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Seahorses upset fifth-seeded Mount Mansfield on Tuesday. The winner of that quarterfinal will be the highest seed to reach Patrick Gym since BFA-St. Albans did it as a 16-seed in 1985.
