Roundup: ‘Neers downed on road



QUINCY, Mass -- The Southern Vermont College baseball team returned to the diamond on Thursday at Eastern Nazarene College but proceeded to fall 5-3.

SVC held a 2-1 lead after the third inning, and were up 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. But in the bottom of the fourth Eastern Nazarene added two runs to tie the game, then scored in the sixth and eighth inning to take the win.

Nathan Cahoone had the only multi-hit day for the Mountaineers, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a strikeout. Roland Hernandez hit a home run for SVC in the top of the fourth, while Cody LaBadia had an RBI single in the first inning.

Justin Wagner went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Eastern Nazarene, while Jeremy Wagner, Max Pugh, Pat Yee and Quentin Moore all had RBIs for Eastern Nazarene.

Dustyn Marfyak picked up the loss for SVC, falling to 0-2 on the year after a 5 2/3 innings showing. Marfyak let up eight hits and three earned runs while walking four and striking out two. Brandon Wells picked up the win for Eastern Nazarene in relief, piching 1 2/3 innings. Doug English got the save.

SVC returns to action on Saturday in a doubleheader against Newbury College.

D-III tennis in town

BENNINGTON -- With a colder-than-usual spring, some of the best Division III tennis teams in the area will play weekend matches at the Bennington Tennis Center.

Defending national champions Williams College will host Tufts University in a men’s tennis match on Saturday at 1 p.m., while on Sunday the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will host Castleton State College in men’s action, also starting at 1 p.m.

MCLA is coached by Bennington resident Trevor Grimshaw.

The events are open to the public and are free of charge.
