Roundup: Eagles slowed by West Rutland



WEST RUTLAND -- West Rutland took a 18-point lead at halftime against Arlington and cruised to a 65-45 win in a Division IV boys basketball matchup.

Joey Callahan had 20 points, including six 3-pointers to lead the Horde, while Jordan Pease had 17 in his first game back to the lineup.

For Arlington (0-7), DJ Jennings led the way with 19 points, followed by Jared Lacoste’s 9.

Arlington faces Poultney on Friday.

Panther bowlers clinch division with win

STILLWATER, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls bowling team continued its strong run toward the sectional tournament with a 4-0 win over rival Stillwater on Wednesday.

The total pins were 3,614 for Hoosick and 2,879 for Stillwater.

The win puts Hoosick Falls at 50-2 (12-0-1) on the season and clinches the Adirondack League southern division championship.

Kyla Day led the way with a career afternoon, firing a 276 high game and 700 series, both all-time marks for her. Ken Marbot (217-639) and Josh McCart (252-604) each reached the 600 plateau.

The league tournament is Feb. 4 at Broadway Lanes.

Cambridge offense struggles in loss

SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. -- Hoosic Valley held Cambridge to four field goals in a 49-13 girls basketball win on Wednesday.

Alyssa Paul had 17 to lead Valley, who also got nine points from Laura McGreevy.

Sarah Cuddihy led Cambridge with seven points.

SVC basketball wins

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Southern Vermont College men’s basketball team used a 23-point night from DeShawn Hamlet to tighten the top of the New England Collegiate Conference standings, as the Mountaineers beat conference leader Mitchell, 77-65, on the road on Wednesday.

Hamlet shot 11-of-13 from the field and added 13 rebounds for a double-double as SVC improved to 6-2 in the conference and 12-5 overall.

Three other Mountaineers scored in double figures, including Dolapo Olugbile’s 13, Eddie Mack III’s 12 and Izzy Melton’s 10. Melton also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Mitchell was led by Parris Hill, who had 26 points and seven boards. Joshua Ford had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the losing effort.

MALA spring registration

BENNINGTON -- Mt. Anthony Lacrosse Association will hold 2014 spring registration on February 25 and 26 at the Bennington Rec Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades K thru 8.

Scholarships and equipment are available. The season starts April 1.

Mack Attack AAU sign-ups

ARLINGTON -- The Mack Attack AAU girls’ basketball season will begin practicing on March 9, and sign-ups are ongoing.

The team provides participants with an opportunity to improve basketball skills and knowledge through a challenging level of play. Girls ages 8-17 who are interested in participating should contact coach Kerry Csizmesia at or call 860-326-5024. Information about the season can be found at
