Roundup: Cougars upset Bulldogs in tennis

MANCHESTER -- The Burr and Burton Academy boys tennis team made history on Wednesday afternoon -- but not the kind they would like.

In playdown action in the Division I tournament, the top-seeded Bulldogs fell to Mount Mansfield 5-2 at home. It was the first time a No. 16 team won a playoff match.

BBA’s top two singles players took home the two wins for BBA, as Peter Oh and Sam Cochrane beat their respective opponents in straight-sets.

But MMU picked up matching 6-2, 6-1 wins at third and fourth singles, then Erik Antonassi beat Christian Webb 6-4, 6-7, 8-6 to give MMU the edge in singles play.

In doubles action, Conor Harrington and Nick Fayette fell at first doubles 4-6, 1-6 to Liam Jennings and Ben Hallman, then the MMU duo of Colby Antonacci and Tom Junge topped Justin Walla and Justin Tegen 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.

BBA finishes the year at 13-1 with the loss. MMU advances to play Stowe in the next round.

BRATTLEBORO -- Burr and Burton Academy baseball player Dylan Bibeau got on base in the top of the ninth, hustled from first to third on a passed ball then scored on a throwing error, all with two outs, to give BBA the game-winning run and lift the Bulldogs to a 4-3 win over Brattleboro on Wednesday.

In the bottom of the inning, Noah Rizio struck out all three batters to secure the win.

Rizio also chipped in with a two-run single in the fourth to help out with the scoring, and Colin McLeish hit a sac-fly in the second to give BBA an early 1-0 lead.
