Roundup: BBA edges Hartford

MANCHESTER -- The Burr and Burton Academy boys basketball team improved to 8-1 after a comeback 50-47 win against Hartford at E.H. Henry Gym on Monday night.

Down by 10 at the half, BBA made a run, capped off by a couple of Dave Shehadi free throws, to earn another victory.

Weston Muench led the way for BBA with 14 points, while senior Jake Stalcup added 10. Shehadi added nine for the Bulldogs, who are third in the most recent VPA rankings.

For Hartford, Josh Clafton scored 11. The Bulldogs host Rutland next Monday.

Panthers squeak past Liverpool

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls Central School wrestling team edged out Section III’s Liverpool, 37-36, on the mats on Saturday.

Hoosick Falls had wins from Luis Weierbach, Nolan Foster, Tyler Randall, Tom Peabody, Colby Davendonis, Mike Mattat, Bryan Sherman, Garrett Wright and Brad Burns.

With the win, Weierbach remains unbeaten at 23-0 on the season. Burns is 22-1 with his decision at 195 pounds.

Flagg earns third NECC rookie award

BENNINGTON -- Southern Vermont College freshman captain Amber Flagg has been named the New England Collegiate Conference women’s basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 13, the third time she has earned the honor.

Flagg had two straight 20-point games and added a game-high 17 in a win at Mitchell College to average 19 points in three games this week for the Mountaineers. The freshman captain shot 86.2 percent from the free throw line and a stellar 42.1 percent from 3-point range.

She currently ranks third in the conference with 16.8 points per game, the most for any freshman in the NECC. She is also second in the conference with a free throw percentage of 83.3.

"Amber continues to perform above my expectations," said SVC coach Mike Quinn. "I don’t see any reason why that growth will not continue because of how hard she works."

Zemianek road race returns May 5

BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.

There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.

The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.

Monument Soccer signups

BENNINGTON -- The Monument Soccer Club has sign-ups next week at the Bennington Sports Center. Monument is a soccer club that participates in the Capital District Youth Soccer League in the spring and runs from April-June with a 10-game season.
