Roundup: Battle Day 5K Aug. 16

BENNINGTON -- The Friends of the Monument will host the 10th annual Battle Day 5K road race on Aug. 16 this year at the Bennington Battle Monument.
The 5K race will take runners down toward the airport and then back up to the monument.
Runners can register early by visiting the Battle Monument, where registration forms are available, or by visiting the Batten Kill Valley Runners website at www.bkvr.net.
Day-of registration will be available starting at 8 a.m. The race will start at 9:30.
Besides the 5K, there will also be a half-mile fun run for kids.
Registration is $15 dollars, while BKVR runners receive a discount for registering.
Awards will be given out for the top male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in each age category.

BENNINGTON -- Sign-ups for MAYAA football are currently underway at Tomasi’s Sports.
There will be one more sign-up event on Aug. 8 at the Ross Pavilion at Willow Park from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
For the Flag division you must be age 6 by Sept. 1. The Tackle division is age 8 and must have played 1 year of flag. The cost is $20 for the flag division and $50 for the tackle division.

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- The 10th annual Don and Bones Volleyball Tournament will be held this Saturday at the Sand Bay on Lyman Street in Hoosick Falls.
The tournament is in honor of Dan Koziol and James Harrington.
Sign-ups will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the cost is $20 per player. Funds raised through the event will provide scholarship money to two Hoosick Falls Central School seniors, as well as to support local families in need.

BENNINGTON -- The Catamount Bow Hunters are hosting a 3-D Archery Competition on Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon at the club on Fuller Road.
The cost for adults is $12, while youths are $5. Cubs are free with a paid adult. Food and beverages are available and members and non-members are welcome.

MAU equipment handout
BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Union High School football team will be hosting an equipment handout and forms collection day on Sunday, Aug. 10.
Interested students are asked to meet at the back door of the gymnasium by the locker room at the following times: Juniors and seniors at 4 p.m. and freshmen and sophomores at 5 p.m.
There will be an informational parent meeting at 4:30 p.m. that day, as well.
Students are also asked to bring their physical participation forms at this time.
BENNINGTON -- The annual Lee Goldsmith Memorial Soccer Tournament will take place on August 9 this year at Willow Park in Bennington.
The tournament, which honors the former MAU athlete who died tragically in 2009 after his fight with cancer, will start at 11 a.m.
Teams must be made up of high school students (as of September 2014), and must have at least five males on the team.
Co-ed teams are allowed, but the team must be made up predominantly of males.
The tournament will feature 7-on-7 soccer, with six outfield players and a goalie. The games will be 25 minutes long, and there will be large goals and no offside rule.
The cost will be $70 per team, and the winning team will receive championship shirts. To register, call or text MAU boys soccer coach Mike Molloy at 802-375-4006.
Teams will pay to play on the day of the tournament. Teams must be registered prior to the morning of the 9th. Check in will run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Bat Brat tryouts
BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Bat Brats will be hosting a tryout for their U16 team on Aug. 23 from noon to 2 p.m.

Bennington Cycle Club
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Cycle Club wants riders for its Tuesday and Wednesday rides. Also, charity rides will be held on August 16 -- the Hoosic River ride -- and the Bart Center no limits ride on September 13.

MAU season passes
BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony Union High School will be offering season passes to home night games for the 2014-15 school year.
A complete fall/winter season pass for all home football, boys and girls soccer, wrestling and boys and girls basketball games will be $60 for adults and $30 for students/senior citizens for a 66 percent savings.
ARLINGTON -- Arlington Memorial High School is looking for coaches for the fall season. Positions open include a middle school cross-country coach, a varsity cross-country coach and a middle school girls soccer coach.
The positions are open until they are filled and candidates are asked to respond as soon as possible.

MANCHESTER -- The 2014 Southern Vermont Sprint Triathlon will be held on August 24 starting at 8 a.m. The SVST begins at Hunter Park (Riley Rink) with an 8-mile bike ride to Emerald Lake, a quarter-mile swim (out and back, close to the island), another 8-mile bike back to Hunter Park and a 3.4-mile run that finishes through the path from the Rec Park to Hunter Park.
"The SVST is an event designed to introduce people to triathlons," said Stephen Murphy, the race director. "The reach is mostly local from Middlebury to Williamstown (Mass.) and Greenwich (N.Y.) to Brattleboro. However, there are some people coming from out of the area as well. While triathlons have grown in popularity, it is unique to have one so close to home and at an affordable price. Most tris cost $75 or more."
To encourage more people to experience a triathlon, SVST is offering a 20 percent discount to students and teachers (please contact Hunter Park 802-362-0150 or email@example.com to verify eligibility for the discount).
The proceeds from the event go to support Hunter Park to develop as a more diverse facility that will offer more to the community both in terms of healthy, fun activities and as a draw for people to make Manchester and the area a travel destination.

Bat Brat golf scramble
BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Bat Brats will be hosting their second annual 4-person golf scramble at the Mount Anthony Country Club on Oct. 12.
The scramble will be a shotgun start, beginning at 1 p.m.
The entry fee is $80 per person, which will include 18 holes of golf with a cart and food.
