Roundup: All-stars honored by MVL

BENNINGTON -- The Marble Valley League named their winter all-stars for boys and girls basketball, nordic skiing and wrestling on Wednesday.

In boys basketball, Mount Anthony Union High School senior Aaryngston Bibens was named to the first team, while Sean Brundage earned a honorable mention nod.

On the girls side, three area athletes were named to the first team -- MAU’s Kate Goodell and Burr and Burton Academy’s Devin Brown and Rory Halligan.

MAU’s Marissa Mahar and Lacy Parmenter earned honorable mentions.

In Nordic skiing, MAU boys Luke Keenan, Will Buckley, Caleb Cohen and Jeremiah Colbath were picked in both the freestyle and classic disciplines, while Ben Faller and Andy Barlow were chosen in the freestyle.

For the girls, MAU’s Becca Romac and Abby Malmborg earned all-star picks in both, while Erin Anderson and Erica Hale were chosen in freestyle and classic, respectively.

BBA’s Helena Bigelow also earned an MVL nod.

For wrestling, MAU dominated the list as 11 were named MVL all-stars. Those chosen include: Tyler Raetz, Troy Gassaway, Dylan Lafountain, Kyle Fletcher, Miguel Calixto, Bailey Willard, Tyler Mattison, Austin Price, Brandon Marcoux-Schaefer, Jack Luciano and Jesse Webb.

VBCA all-star games

WINDSOR -- The Vermont Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games will take place on March 23 at Windsor High School. There will be four games as follows:

* 11:00 a.m. D3-4 Girls;

* 1 p.m. D3-4 Boys;

* 3 p.m. D1-2 Girls;

* 5p.m. D1-2 Boys

The best senior players in the state will play for the final time as a high school player. See rivals playing together, top scorers, play makers and rebounders showcasing their skills. This popular event gives fans one last look at players who have made their winters so enjoyable.

In addition to the four games, the VBCA also recognizes players of the year, coaches of the year, 1,000 point scorers, the Dream Dozen, milestone wins, and this year’s Hall of Fame induction.

BENNINGTON -- Parents of Mount Anthony Union High School athletes are reminded that the school’s participation form needs to be turned in by the first day of practice on March 25.

BENNINGTON -- The third annual ‘Shires of Vermont Marathon,’ a classic point-to-point 26.2 mile road race connecting the southern Vermont towns of Bennington and Manchester, is accepting registrations for the race on May 19. Race applications and online registration are available at The race is organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners to benefit community mental health and developmental services.

Runners from about 30 different states and foreign countries love the course, which will be the same this year as before. It starts at The Bennington Center for the Arts and finishes at Hildene Meadows in Manchester.

There will be several new twists and surprises for runners along the way, including an earlier start time at 8 a.m.

Anyone interested in helping to put on a very popular, large event is welcome to join the organizing committee, which meets monthly.

Arlington basketball fundraiser

ARLINGTON -- Please join your friends and neighbors on Friday, March 22, at the Arlington Memorial High School Gym for a fun-filled evening of basketball. The AMHS boys and girls basketball teams will be competing against the Arlington alumni in a fundraiser to benefit the Fisher Elementary School Playground.

Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., and the girls game will begin at 6 p.m. There will be a concession stand, 50/50 raffle, and knock-out competitions during half time. Admission prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12, with a maximum cost of $20 per family at the door.

Bennington Little League

BENNINGTON -- Late registration and player evaluations for the 2013 season will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the MAU High School gymnasium.

All players ages 9 and up should plan to attend one of the two dates for evaluations unless already on a major league team. Late registrations will also be taken at this time for any players ages 5 through 12.

Lax officials training

BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will be offering training clinics throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating boys lacrosse.

The clinics will include 2 man mechanics, technical and personal fouls, field mechanics, proper signaling, verbal and visual communication, penalty enforcement and pre and post game preparation. The clinics are free and pre-registration is required.

The Southern Vermont clinic will be held on March 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington.

Zemianek road race returns May 5

BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.

There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.

The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
