BENNINGTON — Many turned out for the town's Memorial Day parade on Monday hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The parade stepped off at noon in front of the old Junior High School on North Street, traveled down to the four corners and turned right up North Street. Walkers ended at the Vermont Veteran's Home for a memorial ceremony.

"Most professions today, do not recognize the importance of Memorial Day," Normal LeBlanc, Post 1332 commander said. "Remembrance and sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. Far too often, the nation as a whole takes for granted the freedoms of Americans. Those freedoms were paid for by the lives of others. Few of us actually know that's why we are out collectively remembered on this special day."

Josie Colvin and Dorothy Halvorsen, the two Gold Star Mothers, hung wreaths for their lost sons.
