Pownal man held for alleged assault

BENNINGTON >> A Pownal man was held without bail Monday after being accused of assaulting another.

James M. Brown, 27, pleaded not guilty to a felony count of aggravated assault, two misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, and disorderly conduct. He'll be held until a bail hearing.

According to an affidavit by Vermont State Police, on Sunday at 11:18 p.m. three troopers were dispatched to Sunflower Street in Pownal for a reported fight involving multiple people. Police arrived and saw a child about four years old looking out the residence window. They also saw fresh blood near the door and a broken beer bottle inside.

At this point, Brown came to the door and refused to come out or show his hands. Police removed Brown because they wished to determine if someone was injured inside the home. They could also smell burnt marijuana and inside found a marijuana pipe. They said Brown was highly intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .257 percent.

The two children in the home were sent with their grandparents.

Police spoke to Brown's girlfriend, who said they began to argue and that he shoved her. She left because she was afraid of him. Police spoke to another woman, who said that after Brown shoved his girlfriend, another male stepped in. Brown punched the male in the face and they wrestled to the ground. Brown put the male in a headlock until his face turned blue and his eyes rolled back into his head.

The male escaped with Brown's girlfriend and they left together with the other woman.

The male did not provide a statement to police, who noted he appeared to have been involved in a struggle.

Brown refused to provide a statement as well.
