Pownal crash knocks down tree

POWNAL -- At 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, state police responded to a tree lying across Middle Pownal Road, near Horseshoe Lane. Danny Briggs, 42, of Pownal, had been travelling south when he encountered a patch of ice on the road surface and lost control of his vehicle. He struck a tree, which fell across the road, stopping traffic in both directions. There were no injuries as a result of the crash. When police arrived, Briggs had left the scene of the crash, and was not located until the following day. His 1996 Subaru Impreza was considered totaled. He was issued a citation to appear in Bennington Superior Court on March 31, to respond to the charge of leaving the scene of an accident, as well as several civil violations.
