Police: Store employee stole $3K

BENNINGTON — A former employee of a Shaftsbury convenience store has denied a felony charge that she took $3,000 while working at the business.

Lindsay M. Hawley, of Arlington, allegedly took cash while working last month at the register of Paulin's Inc. store on Route 7A in Shaftsbury, according to Vermont State Police.

Hawley, 34, pleaded not guilty in Vermont Superior Court Bennington Criminal Division on Monday to embezzling more than $100, a felony. Hawley was released with conditions including that she not enter the store.

The store's manager told state police on July 26 that a large sum of money had come up missing, according to an affidavit by Trooper Benjamin Barton.

Hawley was hired July 5, according to the affidavit. Daily banking for several days after July 14, in which Hawley had worked alone, allegedly showed "significant amounts missing," a total of about $3,100. The largest amount of cash missing from the register was $700 on July 23, when Hawley was the closing shift employee.

Police reviewed surveillance footage that allegedly show Hawley on three occasions taking cash from the register and placing it into her pockets.

Troopers spoke with Hawley at the barracks on July 28. She allegedly told police that she took cash from the register three to five times, for a total of between $200 and $400, using it for bills and personal expenses.

When showed a spreadsheet with the days she worked and the full amount of money missing, Hawley "advised the maximum amount she may have taken would have been $900," but that she "was willing to pay the full amount back to make the situation right," according to the affidavit.

Hawley "thought there may be other reasons why there was debt," the affidavit states. The manger told troopers "there were no other reasons why there may have been this debt."
