BENNINGTON -- Police are looking for an unknown assailant following an armed robbery of the CVS pharmacy in Bennington Tuesday night.

Bennington Police Chief Paul Doucette said officers responded to a 911 call around 9 p.m. Tuesday. The caller from the pharmacy said someone had entered the store, jumped over the pharmacy counter and demanded Percocet while displaying a handgun.

"The caller reported that the person did receive an undisclosed amount of narcotics and did leave abruptly," Doucette said.

Police arrived within minutes and locked down the store. Officers canvassed the area and other nearby stores and neighborhoods. A deputy and a canine from the Rensselaer (N.Y) County Sheriff’s Department responded and tracked the suspect for a short distance before losing the trail at the Cumberland Farms gas station.

"We did track the suspect for some time and did receive some evidence. However, the track ended abruptly," Doucette said.

Police believe a car was waiting at the gas station, according to Doucette.

The male suspect was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, with the hood up, along with a black face mask and gloves. The suspect, pictured on surveillance video, was holding a black and silver handgun.

"We were able to verify the complainant’s report with surveillance video," Doucette said. "We’re still trying to do screen shots and things like that with the video."

Doucette said he does not believe there is any threat to the public.

"At this point, we’re following up on leads and the investigation continues. I feel that the Bennington community is safe. At this point, I don’t think there’s a need for public alarm," he said.

Anyone with information about the robbery should call Detective Anthony Silvestro at 802-442-1030.
