MANCHESTER — A man was cited after police said he struck an officer during a sobriety checkpoint last week.

While making contact with the operator of a vehicle, Officer DJ Jennings detected a strong odor of marijuana, according to Manchester police. While Jennings spoke to the driver, identified as David A. Montgomery, Montgomery ingested "a handful of an unknown white powdery substance" that he later told police was crystallized hash. When Montogmery was ordered out of the vehicle, he failed to comply, police said. While officers were attempting to remove Montgomery from the vehicle, he allegedly struck Jennings in the face.

Montgomery was cited for assault on a law enforcement officer and impeding a public officer and is scheduled to appear in Bennington criminal court on Dec. 18. He was also given a civil citation for possessing marijuana.
