Man shows up to Bennington PD allegedly intoxicated
BENNINGTON -- A local man free on conditions that he not possess, consume, or purchase alcohol checked in at the Bennington Police Department while intoxicated Saturday following a January arrest for driving under the influence.
In a written release, state police said Jacob Allen Smith, 36, of Shaftsbury, was arrested for violating his conditions of release. Smith was released with additional conditions and issued a date to appear back in court.
State police said they were contacted by local authorities at approximately 8:20 a.m. for the violation of conditions. While checking in at the police station, Smith showed signs of alcohol impairment, prompting police to provide a preliminary alcohol breath test which tested positive for the presence of alcohol.

Two-vehicle accident at routes 7A/67
SHAFTSBURY -- A two-vehicle accident Sunday at the intersection of routes 7A and 67 caused some damage but resulted in no injuries.
In a written release, state police said the accident was reported at about 4:27 p.m. When police arrived, both vehicles were still in the roadway blocking the northbound lane of travel on Route 7A. The accident occurred as Samantha Coleman 21, of Shaftsbury, attempted to pull onto Route 7A and collided with the other vehicle, driven by Linda Baker, 64, also of Shaftsbury.
Police said Coleman’s 2003 Buick LeSabre received a minor scrape to the front bumper, but Baker’s 2004 Ford Focus received significant front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene.
Both drivers and their passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time. No injuries were reported but Bennington Rescue did respond to evaluation Coleman. Police said the investigation was continuing.
Police: Intoxicated man on porch was fugitive
READSBORO -- An allegedly intoxicated man found asleep on a porch in Readsboro was arrested on an active warrant from Berkshire County in Massachusetts.
In a written release, state police said Jessey L. Deitner, 56, of North Adams, Mass., was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice in Vermont. The offense committed in Massachusetts was a violation of an abuse prevention order. State police said they were called to the Tunnel Street residence in Readsboro at about 11 p.m. last Friday, Feb. 15. Deitner was lodged at Marble Valley Correctional Center with $15,000 bail and a court date in Bennington Criminal Court.
Snow and slush and alcohol lead to accident
SHAFTSBURY -- Snow and slush were the road conditions at the time of an early morning accident Saturday in Shaftsbury, in which the driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
In a written release, state police said Stephanie E. Lorette, 23, of Bennington, had been traveling east from New York along Route 67 when she lost control of her vehicle and collided with a telephone pole. The initial call of a single vehicle crash was reported at about 4:25 a.m.
Lorette, who police said suffered a minor concussion, and her passenger David P. Cross, 22, also of Bennington, were transported to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for evaluation. Cross was not injured.
According to police, their investigation revealed Lorette was under the influence while operating the vehicle and as a consequence she was charged with DUI. The crash is still under investigation and anyone with information can contact the Vermont State Police in Shaftsbury at 802-442-5421.
