Aggravated Domestic Assault
POWNAL -- On March 23, at approximately 12:21 a.m., Vermont state place were dispatched to Cider Hill Road in Pownal for an ongoing family disturbance. The caller reported a physical fight between a man and a woman who both live at the address. Upon arrival, state police met the male, James Mathis, 44, of Pownal, at the entrance to the residence, where he was taken into custody. Troopers conducted an investigation, which led to Mathis being charged with second degree aggravated domestic assault, domestic assault, and driving under the influence. Mathis was processed at the Shaftsbury state police barracks, and was later remanded to the Marble Valley Correctional Facility for lack of $5,000 bail. He will appear in Bennington County Superior Court - Criminal Division on March 24 at 12:30 p.m.
Criminal driving with a license suspended
BENNINGTON -- On March 12 at approximately 11:50 a.m., Vermont state police pulled over Zackery A. Bentley, 22, of Bennington in a motor vehicle stop on McCall Street in Bennington. It was discovered during the stop, according to State Trooper Wayne Godfrey, that Bentley’s license was criminally suspended in the state of Vermont. Bentley was processed at the Shaftsbury state police barracks, and was issued a criminal citation to appear in Bennington Superior Court - Criminal Division on May 19 at 8:15 a.m. to answer to the charge. ARLINGTON -- On March 18 at approximately 6:03 p.m., Vermont state police stopped motor vehicle operator Jason P. Morse, 31, of Arlington, on Route 7A in Arlington. The officer discovered that Morse is criminally suspended to operate motor vehicles in the state of Vermont. Morse was processed for the offense and was released with a criminal citation to appear in Bennington Superior Court - Criminal Division on April 28, at 8:15 a.m. to answer to the charge of criminal DLS.
SUNDERLAND -- On March 22, at approximately 5:22 p.m., state trooper Elliott Justinger conducted a traffic stop on Route 7 in Sunderland. He found the driver, Bernabe Nunez, 39, of St. Albans, to be criminally suspended. Nunez provided consent for Justinger to search his vehicle, and a small amount of marijuana was discovered. Nunez will appear in Bennington Criminal Court on April 28 to answer to the charge of criminal DLS.
SHAFTSBURY -- On March 18, at approximately 8:59 a.m., Vermont state police responded to an active domestic dispute on Route 7A in Shaftsbury. After an investigation, officers arrested Daniel J. Shulman, 39, of Shaftsbury, for domestic assault and inferference with access to emergency services. Shulman was processed and released to appear in Bennington Superior Court - Criminal Division on March 19 at 12:30 p.m.
Driving Under the Influence
SHAFTSBURY -- On March 19, at approximately 4:40 p.m., the Vermont state police responded to the Kettle Hotel in Shaftsbury for an unrelated incident when they discovered Feliciano Lopez, 34, of Shaftsbury, sleeping in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle. Police conducted a welfare check on Lopez, and observed signs of alcohol impairment. Lopez was processed at the Shaftsbury state police barracks for driving under the influence of alcohol. Lopez was transported to Marble Valley Correctional Facility. He is scheduled to appear in Bennington County Criminal Court on April 7 at 8:15 a.m.
BENNINGTON -- On March 22, at approximately 2:20 a.m., state trooper Elliott Justinger observed a vehicle on Northside Drive in Bennington failing to maintain its lane and conducted a traffic stop. Wayne Russell, 37, of Pownal, agreed to participate in a standard field sobriety test, and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. He was processed at the Bennington Police Department, and will appear in Bennington Court on April 14 to answer to the charge.
