Police arrest four at Midnight Madness

BENNINGTON -- Four people were issued citations at Midnight Madness Thursday, three for being involved in a fight and one for unsafe driving.

Bennington Police said at 9:30 p.m. There was a fight between two males, ages 16 and 17, in front of 450 Main Street. The 16-year-old was cited for simple assault while the 17-year-old was cited for simple assault and given diversion paperwork for alcohol consumption. A third male, age 15, was cited for disorderly conduct because he was encouraging the other two to fight and shouting profanities in a crowded area near children.

All three were cited to appear in Vermont Superior Court at a later date. Police did not release their names.

About an hour later, officers on foot witness a 2000 Acura Integra revving its engine while stopped for pedestrians on a crosswalk on School Street. It squealed its tires for 30 feet up the street while pedestrians were still on the crosswalk. The driver, Steven Christman, 25, of Shaftsbury, was cited for negligent vehicle operation and reckless endangerment. Police said a two-year-old child was in the vehicle at the time.
