PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Rescue crews are searching for a missing swimmer in the Housatonic River off Mill Street. Authorities started their search around noon on Tuesday, and had called for an underwater camera.

The man was apparently swimming in a large pool in the river upstream of a dam and was pulled underneath the surface by a strong current.

Firefighters in wetsuits were using ladders and ropes tethered to shore to plumb the depths of the deep hole with long pike poles.

The deep pool apparently drains into a large underwater pipe and continues downstream.

Several people were swimming in the hole when the man went under water.
