Pick a cause, any cause

Tuesday February 19, 2013

For the shortest month of the year, February has a whole lot going on.

Perhaps most important to note is that February is American Heart Month and Heart Disease Awareness Month. Throughout this month, community groups nationwide host fundraising events to raise money for education and research while raising awareness about heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, killing more than 600,000 Americans each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Secondly, February is Black History Month, also known as National African American History Month -- an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries including Canada and the United Kingdom also devote a month to celebrating black history.

February is also noteworthy as National Cancer Prevention Month. With the National Cancer Institute estimating one in two adults will get cancer in his or her lifetime, February can be a month to focus on a healthy lifestyle to help keep cancer at bay.

There seems to be an overabundance of awareness this month.

February is also Library Lovers Month; Career and Technical Education Month; Low Vision Awareness Month; Safety Awareness Month; Canned Food Month; National Cherry Month; National Weddings Month; Great American Pie Month and National Grapefruit Month.

And, February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month; Electrical Safety Awareness Month; School-Based Health Center Awareness Month; Sinus Pain Awareness Month; and Body Awareness Month.

Also, February is National Pet Dental Health Awareness Month; Heartworm Awareness Month; Termite Awareness Month.

Additionally, February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month; Avocado and Banana Month; Dog Training Education Month; and Marfan Syndrome Awareness Month.

It's also Marijuana Awareness Month; National Bird Feeding Month; National Condom Month; National Hot Breakfast Month; National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month; and Responsible Pet Owner's Month.

In February, we also recognize Disorders Screening Program Month; Ethnic Equality Month; Wise Mental Health Consumer Month; Sweet Potato Month and Youth Leadership Month.

These may all be worthy causes, but could it be we're getting a little carried away with all this awareness?

Fortunately, with all of that to consider, February is also National Time Management Month.
