Patriots clinch playoff berth

BRATTLEBORO -- Needing a win to get into the playoffs, the Mount Anthony Union High School girls basketball team pulled off its most dominant performance of the season, defeating Brattleboro, 68-36, on Friday night in the regular season finale.

Nine players scored for the Patriots (6-14), led by 13 points from Makayla Farrara, 11 from Brinkley Legacy and 10 from Jenna Crowley.

"We played really, really well," MAU coach Courtney Reif said. "If we didn’t win we didn’t get to keep going. We were focused."

The MAU defense held Brattleboro (8-12) in check throughout. The Patriots led 30-11 at halftime and no Colonel player scored more than 7 points.

Raiders trip up BBA

MANCHESTER -- Rutland broke free from a low-scoring first half to beat Burr and Burton Academy, 50-33, in girls basketball on Friday night.

Kaitlyn DeLong scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter for the Raiders (12-8), who have won nine straight games. Rutland led 15-11 at halftime and 31-20 after three quarters.

Freshman Hannah Nicholson led BBA (10-10) with 18 points.

Arlington clips Wildcats

WILMINGTON -- The Arlington Memorial High School girls basketball team likely clinched the sixth seed in the upcoming Division IV playoffs with a 47-36 win against Twin Valley on Friday night in both teams’ regular season finale.

Molly Elwell led a balanced Arlington (11-8) attack with 15 points. Jennah and Julia Lacoste each added eight points. The Eagles led 26-12 at halftime.

"It was a hard-fought game. That team has gotten a lot better since the last time we played them," Arlington coach Larry Andrews said.

Hannah Swanson led the Wildcats with 10 points.

Hoosac advances

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Defending champion Hoosac School advanced to the Class D New England Prep School Athletic Council boys basketball final for the second straight year with a 73-60 win against Boston Trinity on Friday night.

Gregg Brathwaite led five players in double figures with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Unique McLean added 13, Domani Guscott hit for 12 and Jabari Noel chipped in with 11.

Hoosac will face either Chase Collegiate or Chauncy Hall School in Sunday’s championship game at 11:30 a.m. at Worcester Academy.

Benn LL registration

BENNINGTON -- Registration for the 2013 season will conclude today at the Firehouse on River Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All players ages 5-12 in the Bennington area, including former Norshaft registrants, looking to play baseball this year need to register on one of these four dates. For all registrants a photocopy of the birth certificate is required.

Mack Attack registration

BYSL hosts sign-up

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Young Women’s Softball League is hosting their annual sign-ups. All girls ages 7-12 as of January 1 are encouraged to sign up.

New player sign-ups will be held today from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

All first-year players should bring a copy of their birth certificate. Registration fee is $35 for 1 child, $50 for 2 children/family, and $70 for 3 or more.

Lax officials training

BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will be offering training clinics throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating boys lacrosse.

The clinics will include 2 man mechanics, technical and personal fouls, field mechanics, proper signaling, verbal and visual communication, penalty enforcement and pre and post game preparation. The clinics are free and pre-registration is required.

The Southern Vermont clinic will be held on March 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington.

Zemianek road race returns May 5

BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.

There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.

The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
