Parts of Vermont, N.H., Maine could get more than a foot

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Heavy snow is on its way to northern New England, with the possibility of more than a foot in some areas and a mix of sleet and freezing rain in others.

The National Weather Service has put out a winter storm warning for southern New Hampshire, Maine and central and eastern Vermont on Thursday morning through Friday morning. The area could get 8 to 14 inches of snow. Portland, Maine, may see 8 or 9 inches and inland areas could get more than a foot. In Vermont, the storm could dump up to 14 inches in eastern and central parts of the state.

Light snow started falling by 6 a.m. Thursday. Schools throughout the region were closed or planned early dismissals.

The storm is expected to wrap up Friday afternoon.
