Officials approve purchase of former Burlington College land

BURLINGTON, VT. >> Burlington officials have signed off on purchasing a dozen acres of land formerly owned by Burlington College.

WCAX-TV reports the city council unanimously voted Monday to use money from the city's Conservation Legacy Fund to buy the land for $500,000.

The fund is designed to purchase and protect natural areas and open space.

The college sold 27 acres of land to a developer in hopes of reducing its debt. Mayor Miro Weinberger's office said in December a tentative agreement was reached to build a housing development on the land.
