New Vermont campaign hitches jobs promotion to tourism efforts
WATERBURY -- Gov. Peter Shumlin and business leaders announced a new Vermont-centric jobs initiative Wednesday. Great Jobs in Vermont is an online jobs listing and marketing effort designed to connect job seekers with available positions in Vermont. The website is www.greatjobsinvermont.com.
The heart of the functionality is an existing job listings website, www.vermontjoblink.com. Funded by federal dollars and run by the Department of Labor, Vermont Job Link is free to use.
"We're going to get the word out that Vermont is not only the best place to live and play, but it's a great place to work as well," Shumlin said in a news release.
The initiative was announced at the Beverage Technology Center of the newly renamed Keurig Green Mountain in Waterbury.
In addition to the online job listings, the campaign includes the LinkedIn group of a newly formed Vermont Recruiters Association. An advertising campaign is also underway to bring attention to Vermont as a place to live and work.
On the marketing side, the Agency of Commerce and Community Development created a series of digital ads for inclusion in email newsletters, websites, mailings and social media messages. Pat Moulton, the new secretary of the agency, said ACCD is partnering with other state agencies, chambers of commerce, colleges and professional associations to get the word out.
The state's job listings website was recently renovated and still more changes are pending, according to Dave Lahr, with the Vermont Department of Labor. As of publication time, the functionality of browsing job listings by industry was not functional - which Lahr said he would look into immediately.
Other barriers are built-in, starting with required registration to view complete job postings.
Lahr said the more information job seekers and employers provide during registration, the more assistance the department can provide. Depending on an individual's circumstances, he said, staff may be able to connect people with additional services and programs.
For unregistered users, a quick job search can be tailored to keywords or narrowed within a given radius of a particular town or zip code. The search brings up excerpted job postings that may or may not give the hiring company's name. To view the complete listing, free registration is required.
Vermont Job Link also is free to employers, who can self-post on the site or take advantage of additional services from DOL staff. Resources range from resume screening and candidate referrals to job fairs.
A link to the Job Link website is provided on the landing page of the new Great Jobs in Vermont website. Aside from that link, all pages of the greatjobsinvermont.com site are geared more toward quality of life and outdoor and cultural activities than employment.
That's because, despite the name of the site, the portal to Job Link was conceived more as an add-on to the state's summer tourism outreach, not as a standalone jobs campaign. Nancy Brooks, the state's chief marketing officer, said it made more sense to hitch the Great Jobs in Vermont initiative onto an existing framework, rather than create another website from scratch.
The hybrid summer tourism website and jobs portal is paid for by a combination of state dollars and private sponsorships.
