More time for permit comments
MONTPELIER (AP) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is extending the public comment period on a proposal to change the way permits are issued for projects on waterways in Vermont and the other New England states.
The agency wants to suspend existing general permits in each of the six New England states in favor of New England General Permits.
If given final approval, the New England General Permits would authorize activities in the inland waters and off the coasts of New England.
Officials say the existing state-by-state permitting system made sense in 1990s. But officials feel it now makes more sense to develop a regional permit. Officials say the proposed system wouldn’t significantly change how the corps regulates water activities. The extended public comment ends on Aug. 28.
