MAUHS students take the ‘Quantum Leap'

BENNINGTON -- Twenty-four students involved in Mount Anthony Union High School's Quantum Leap program exhibited the fruits of their labor from the course of the past semester on Friday. The program, affiliated with the school's Bridges and Alternative Education programs, focuses around smaller class sizes and more individualized, project-based curriculum for students identified as needing to be re-engaged in their classroom learning.

Friday's was the 17th Quantum Leap exhibit. Most of the class projects focused around issues of sustainability, which, according to program director Danielle Crosier, "there's something about it that grabs them."

High school freshman Jessica Wilkinson created her informational display on environmental issues around the story arc of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. From initially well-forested conditions, Wilkinson demonstrated the story's moral of the consequences of environmental degradation as fewer trees beget smog, bad air quality, and ultimately "bottles of air to buy" to breath, she said.

According to informational literature at Friday's exhibition, the Quantum Leap program typically focuses students' research and writing on understanding the world around them, sustainability, and issues of social justice.

Dylan Blowers, another high school freshman, created his own display space containing all types of "treasure." While a skull-and-crossbones flag hung overhead various items appearing to be pirate booty, Blowers indicated to other examples of treasure included in his exhibition like sports memorabilia.

While parents and families toured the various exhibitions Friday evening, various auctions and fundraisers took place benefiting both the Quantum Leap program and also sustainability efforts in other countries.

Another Quantum Leap exhibit will be scheduled later this year following the spring semester.
