Mount Anthony Union principal search underway
The job description has been posted and a candidate screening committee has been assembled.
Members held a public engagement "listening forum" in the auditorium on Thursday night.
Attendees said MAU is a diverse school and spoke about education opportunities they value for the students. Some pointed out that the school faces challenges, including a high number of students from families in poverty and students who have experienced trauma.
Among the many comments collected was the need for someone who can work with other stakeholders in the community.
"We need someone at the top who can articulate a vision to community members, staff and students," one man said. "That's something we've lacked for two years."
Former high principal Glenda Cresto resigned in August. Serving in the interim is Laura Boudreau, director of curriculum development for the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union.
Boudreau has agreed to continue serving in the interim through the end of the first semester, SVSU Superintendent James Culkeen said during the MAU board meeting Wednesday.
"She and I will review that and discuss how long it will last," Culkeen said. The intent is to not bring in a new principal before July 1. "No decision has been made for beyond January," he said.
A screening committee will review the candidates and make a recommendation to the superintendent on what candidates he should review, MAU Board Chairman Tim Holbrook said during the meeting. It's the superintendent's responsibility to make his choice on what candidate to recommend and the board would then accept or not accept the recommendation.
Appointed to the screening committee were two MAU board members (David Durfee and Leon Johnson) and SVSU Human Resources Director Edmund McTernan, who will serve as chairman. Also serving are two parents appointed by the Teachers Association and two parents appointed by Boudreau.
The job description and application was advertised on Oct. 27. The application deadline is Nov. 28.
